Description
Built in the 1950s, this neighbourhood has circumstances that distinguish it from the rest of the social neighbourhoods. Right away its extraordinary location (over the mouth of the Douro river, the “Foz”) but also the architectural quality of the buildings, the human scale, the public space generated because of the neighbourhood’s location. Like in every neighbourhood, it went through an unregulated process of appropriation and transformation, to a certain extent understandable considering the small size of the original houses, incapable of responding to the needs and ways of life of its inhabitants. Architect Inês Lobo gives back to this group of buildings a unity and identity that were lost, putting great attention in the reconstruction of original building elements and treatment of the public space –rethinking and transforming deeply its inner life. “Continue-innovating”, as architect Fernando Távora would say.
