Description
It is a house in the city, in a neighbourhood developed by the Estado Novo [New State] at the end of the 1940s, destined for the middle class. The group of row houses, in sets of two, with a backyard and garden, obeyed a project-type that has been changed by the several extensions, visible in several houses, by the author-like character clearly far from the anonymous model-house repetition principle that characterized that neighbourhood in its beginning. In this particular case, the renovation tries to re-establish the original order by building a new façade in the alignment of the already expanded neighbour house, deceiving the observer with a new symmetry invented by the modern architect. Even though the house looks the same, it nevertheless has gained a new life in its interior. Adolf Loos’s lesson is explored to the maximum in the variations of height that allow the gaining of new spaces of comprehension and expansion, as well as the interior spans that reveal interiors within the interior. In the garden there is also a new pergola and something reminds us of Schinkel.
