Description
We read in the Public Interest building classification process, that the Carvalhosa Collective Housing Block “is an exemplary work, built in a particularly complex and difficult time, marked by Estado Novo’s nationalist wave and by the anguishes and uncertainties of Portuguese architects when faced with the paths to tread” – it is in this context that the architectural production of Arménio Losa and Cassiano Barbosa makes its way, managing to get a coherence that the passage of time has made exceptional. Let’s highlight the building’s indentation in contrast with the dominant alignment of Boavista Street, the surprising composition of the façade, the entrance portico and the helical sculptural-like staircase in the well-lit common area. The apartments contradict the tradition and bring forth service and social areas to the hustle of the street and the private areas to the patio, turned to the sun and to tranquillity, ending in wide terraces thought as solariums.
