Description

It’s in the first years of school that humans develop their deepest roots and Fernando Távora was aware of the sensibility that a “primary school” demanded. He wrote about this work, “architecture is one of the weapons man has for his own happiness”. Implanted in the old Cedro Farm, the school develops in threes volumes (a multipurpose room articulated with two arms destined to separate students by genre) associated to inside leisure areas that, in their turn, open up to garden spaces. The wise game of volumes under the light reminds us of Le Corbusier, but their materiality takes us to popular architecture that was being questioned by architects at the time. It was the growing idea of a third way. “Like a tree [wrote Távora], this building has its roots, gives shadow and protection to whoever takes shelter under it, it has its beautiful moments and as it was born, one day it will die after living its life.” It prevails, still.
